merican electronic DJ and production duo consisting of Alexander “Alex” Pall and Andrew “Drew” Taggart, The Chainsmokers unreleased their new song “Time Bomb” leaked online
The Chainsmokers are Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall from New York City. They write and produce their own songs, which frequently feature guest singers.
The duo first gained attention with their viral hit “#Selfie” in 2014, and then with their smash song “Roses” and first EP Bouquet.
The pair discussed their plans to release tracks with their voices in a March 2016 YouTube video. This was evident when Andrew Taggart’s song “Closer,” performed by American singer-songwriter Halsey, was released in July 2016. “Closer” became The Chainsmokers’ and Halsey’s most well-known song.
In 2016, The Chainsmokers had a breakout year, with platinum-certified original tracks “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer” leading their second EP Collage. The pair had their most successful year yet, with three GRAMMY nominations and one GRAMMY for Best Dance Recording for “Don’t Let Me Down.”
In a red carpet interview with Entertainment Weekly on February 12, 2017, the pair revealed their first album, Memories…Do Not Open, following their first GRAMMY victory. On April 7, 2017, the album was released, and it was followed by a “Memories: Do Not Open” tour in the United States.
The Chainsmokers’ commercial success continued in 2017, with the release of “Paris” and “Something Just Like This,” tying The Beatles and the Bee Gees for the most Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 singles at the same time.
After a brief hiatus from song releases, the duo returned in January 2018 with “Sick Boy,” the first single from their second album of the same name. According to a Billboard article, The Chainsmokers intend to create an album by releasing a song nearly every month. The singles “This Feeling,” “Sick Boy,” “Side Effects,” and “Everybody Hates Me” charted at 50, 65, 66, and 100 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.
The duo wasted no time in announcing their third album, World War Joy, as well as their second arena tour, which will kick off in the fall of 2019. The album’s first single, “Who Do You Love,” featuring Australian pop-rock duo 5 Seconds of Summer, was an instant hit, reaching number 54 on the Hot 100 and earning Platinum certification from the RIAA. The Platinum single “Call You Mine,” featuring American singer/songwriter Bebe Rexha, and the Gold single “Takeaway,” featuring American DJ/producer Illenium and Nashville-based recording artist Lennon Stella, both charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 56 and 69, respectively. On December 6, 2019, the album was released and debuted at #65 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and #1 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, selling 14,000 copies in its first week.
On February 24, 2020, the duo announced a social media hiatus to work on their fourth, as-yet-untitled studio album. Following an almost two-year hiatus, the pair announced the impending release of “High,” their first new song in over two years, on January 6, 2022. On January 28, 2022, the song was released and debuted at #57 on the Hot 100 in its first week, having a huge impact on pop radio and quickly debuting within the top 30.
The pair has certified sales of over 50 million singles and approximately 5 million albums in the United States alone.
