The album comes out on March 11th and today, we have the official tracklist for it, featuring 14 tracks in total and guest appearances from Tyga (2 songs), 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion (on the lead single ‘Lick‘), Offset, Sean Paul and Beenie Man.
ALPHA is the first studio album by Shenseea, set to be released on March 11, 2022 under Rich Immigrants/Interscope Records. The influences of pop, reggae, and hip-hop all over the record sum the artist’s current artistic path. The album’s first two singles, Run Run and Be Good, confirmed that Shenseea will be more experimental with her sound. Her debut album is set for release under Rich Immigrants/Interscope Records.
This album is me experimenting. So yes, there’s a vibe like this that you’ve never heard, but there are also other songs that you’ve never heard a vibe like that, either. So, I feel like […] I’m going to put it out there and then I’m going to see people’s reaction. If they react to everything, then trust me, they beat.
The artist first announced the album with several posts (with the majority of them hinting at lyrics of upcoming songs) on her Instagram profile throughout 2021. The album’s first two singles, “Lick” and “R U That,” confirmed Shenseea’s change of pace in her sound.
More About Shenseea:
The Jamaican artist has also been named Apple Music’s latest “Up Next” artist, which is a monthly artist initiative geared towards identifying, showcasing and elevating rising talent. Shenseea opens up about her late mother, the drive and ambition that was instilled in her by those who raised her, being a mother to her son Rajeiro, and more in the short.
Although Shenseea has been steadily rising as a prominent pop and dancehall artist for the past few years, the end of 2021 and beginning of 2022 have been monumental for her. After Kanye West recruited her for two features on his August 2021 Donda album, Shenseea felt poised to takeover in the new year.
For the Jamaican singer, this run begins with “Lick,” her brand new single and sexual music video with Megan Thee Stallion which released on Friday (Jan. 21). On Saturday (Jan. 22), she started an Instagram Live to discuss how good she feels about how well the song has been received: “We made the news… I’m about to go pray… I was so happy, we’ve been trending for 25 hours. 2.1 million, almost 2.2 million and counting on YouTube. The streams are going crazy, I need y’all to continue streaming… I was working for two weeks prior to this release, and my team, I just want to thank y’all because y’all know how long I’ve waited just to get on these charts and I’m about to dominate.”
She continued by saying this song is a springboard for her coming into her upcoming album Alpha, named for her strong personality: “That’s why this moment is so big for me because it’s the start of what I’m going to do. I’m telling you. For the album that’s coming, that album is for everybody. I named the album ‘ALPHA’ because it resonates with my personality. I’ve always felt like the head of my household, and I run things, not things running me. Me leading, not me following people. People follow me. I lead. I am a leader. It means strength for me…To be an alpha is to be strong, to lead, to be dominant, and I’ve been dominating.”
Shenseea explained that Alpha will see her go beyond the dancehall genre she has occupied at the start of her career: “I told myself, ‘I’m going to do dancehall for five years.’ I’ve given myself to dancehall, I’ve given y’all hits upon hits upon hits upon hits for five years. I’m not leaving dancehall because I could never, but I have such a bigger dream for myself, ever since I was a child. I’m going to achieve it because, at the end of the day, it is my life. It is what I want and what I have always dreamt of.”
Shenseea gained recognition after remixing the well-known Vybz Kartel’s song “Loodi” and performing on a side stage at Reggae Sumfest in 2015, she took the main stage in 2017. As her notoriety grew, she toured internationally.
Vybz Kartel and Shenseea then dropped a hot collab “Secret (Remix)” in October 2018. Alongside her singing career, she holds multiple corporate sponsorship deals with companies such as Telecom, Firm Flow, Boom and a Pepsi-Cola JA sponsorship.
In 2016, she won “Young Hot and Hype Artiste” at the Youth View Awards; Break Out Celebrity of 2016, and Collaboration of The Year for her song “Loodi” with Vybz Kartel which has been her most successful track to date.
In addition to dancehall music she has shown skills in freestyling as a rapper. She teamed up with Sean Paul for the 2017 single “Rolling” and on the leg of his 2017 European tour.
Since her rise to fame, she has done numerous tours around the world with her team Romeich Entertainment. She continues to work with other musicians both Jamaican and American.
She was featured on Christina Aguilera’s 2018 album Liberation, on the song “Right Moves”. After signing with Interscope records in 2019, she released a new hip-hop/dancehall track featuring American artist Tyga, called “Blessed” which has clocked in 55 million views on YouTube.
Shenseea also collaborated with Kanye West on his album, Donda, appearing on the songs “Pure Souls”, alongside Roddy Ricch, and “Ok Ok Pt 2” with Rooga. She was also onstage during West’s Chicago Donda event. For her collaborations on West’s album, Shenseea received an Album of the Year nomination at the 2022 64th Grammy Awards, marking her first Grammy nomination.
On 21 January 2022, Shenseea released the song “Lick”, featuing Megan Thee Stallion. The song is expected to be included on her upcoming debut album named “Alpha”, which Shenseea said would be released on March 11th, 2022.
During her off days, you can now find Shenseea at Romeich Entertainment recording a new track daily. At the beginning of 2016, Shenseea recorded her debut single “Jiggle Jiggle” that shot through the island like a strike from lightning. As though this wasn’t enough for a new artist, opportunities lent itself to her again when she was approached to work with Vybz Kartel on a track titled “Loodi”.
