“SAOKO,” which will be the opener to the album, contains Rosalía’s trademark sassy, rich singing over boundary-pushing pop production. As she repeatedly proclaims in the hook “yo me transformo,” which translates to her transforming, it seems “SAOKO” introduces Rosalía’s potent new era.
Since Rosalía’s breakout sophomore studio album in 2018, her star began to shine brighter and brighter. Her growing status led to more potent collaborations with some of America’s finest like Travis Scott and Billie Eilish.
Now, the Spanish urbano/pop singer is a little over a month away from her next studio album MOTOMAMI. This week, Rosalía announced this long-awaited project is set to release on March 18. The album’s first promotional single came in the form of “LA FAMA” with The Weeknd in November.
‘MOTOMAMI’ is Rosalía’s third studio album. It is scheduled for release in 2022. The album was preceded by El Mal Querer and Los Ángeles released 2018 and 2017 respectively. Presented as conceptual, experimental and “her most personal and confessional album so far”, it is scheduled to include vocal appearances by Tokischa, Frank Ocean, Tego Calderón, The Weeknd and Billie Eilish.
MOTOMAMI looks to be momentous for Rosalía, as Rolling Stone provided a fascinating excerpt of their take on the forthcoming album: “MOTOMAMI is a masterpiece…It’s an innovative, avant-garde work that captures Rosalía’s roots and technical capabilities… She challenges commercial music as we know it. …In fact, she takes apart the traditional structure of Spanish-language pop music….“
Blessings have fallen from theRosalía tree in abundance this week, and it’s no different today. Again, the tree has been shaken, and this time, the El Mar Querer popstress delivers with the unveiling of a new tease for her upcoming music video “Saoko.”
The 18-second video teaser delivers a whirlwind of chaos, showing Rosalía and her pack gliding on the highway under the night sky in a heist fashion on motorcycles. In less than 24 hours, the video already amounts to over 1 million views, coming as no surprise.
Rosalía announced the MOTOMAMI back in 2 November 2021. It will be released through Columbia Records. On 11 November 2021, Rosalía released “La Fama”, featuring Canadian singer, The Weeknd as the lead single off the album. In December 2021, Rockstar Games launched a new Grand Theft Auto Online radio station, MOTOMAMI Los Santos, curated by Rosalía and Arca.
Regardless, the singles that have been released thus far have been experimentally seductive for better or worse. Tracks like “La Fama,” featuring The Weeknd, salute classic Bachata feels, while “Saoko” takes us on a ride with trap-infused reggaeton, reminiscent of the early 2000s Daddy Yankee sound, and no one is complaining.
It is no surprise that La Rosalía is ready for global music success with “Saoko.” Overall, it’s a slight glimpse of what to expect for the international star. And one thing is for sure: Rosalía’s new reign in music is endless, and we’re ready for it.
The album’s title is confected as a non-accepted binominal. Rosalía stated that she chose to name her album like that because it “is structured in binaries, two types of contrasting energy.” She also explained that the album will be “separated in two parts”.
Moto is the most divine, experimental, frictional and strong part of the album while Mami is the realest, most personal, confessional and vulnerable part. Rosalía also stated that “feminism is implicit in the intention. It is very much present in some songs, and maybe not some much in some others, because in the end, it’s all the emotional journey of the ups and downs an artist can take. There’s a lot of my day-to-day life that’s why this vindication of women and femininity are implicit.
Rosalía hopes Motomami “provides a feminist counterbalance to misogyny in music”. In 2020, Pharrell Williams spoke to the Othertone podcast that he was “blown away by the title” and by “how well Rosalía knows herself”, and expressed that he is “honoured to be a part of it”. The title also references the company her mother Pilar Tobella runs, Motomami S.L., which administrates activities around artist representation.
